Dino’s back as Matt Helm, this time thwarting a BIG-O plot involving a Helio-Beam.

He’s got a nicer car, a better co-star in Ann-Margret, and a bigger budget as evidenced by the Monaco location shooting, but this second entry in the Matt Helm series lacks much of the quirky charm that made the first, The Silencers, something of a guilty pleasure.

Philip Marlowe’s big screen debut. A stylish adaptation of Raymond Chandler’s Farewell My Lovely that sees Dick Powell play Marlowe, a private investigator hired by recent parolee ‘Moose’ Malloy, a giant thug played by Mike Mazurki, to find his girl Velma. The trail leads Marlowe to a sham psychic healer played by Otto Kruger, a wealthy mark, and his vampy wife played by Claire Trevor.

Murders in the Rue Morgue 1932
Bela Lugosi plays a mad scientist injecting blood from his sideshow ape into abducted women. I appreciated the stylish cinematography and cooky mid-nineteenth-century Paris production design. But the talky script (with dialog punch-ups by John Huston!) and lame ape-suit effects proved too much. The scariest thing about this movie was Lugosi’s unibrow.

Music in Darkness 1948
A lesser Bergman effort sees upper-class Malmsten blinded in a military accident. During his recovery, he inspires lower-class Zetterling to pursue an education. She falls for him, but their class divide proves too large an obstacle. Time passes. Malmsten slides further down the social ladder, while Zetterling ascends. A chance meeting reunites them. You can see where this is going.
