This reimagining of Chucky as a rogue AI feels like a Black Mirror story with slasher tropes grafted on, or a slasher story punched up to be more “relevant”. The idiot plot overshadows some terrific moments—some chilling, some hilarious. Cutting the ridiculous origin prologue would help.

Curse of Chucky 2013
A back-to-basics sequel set in an old house full of long shadows and creaky doors. Outside, a perpetual thunderstorm rages. Inside, a wheelchair-bound young woman realizes the toy doll in her home may have supernatural powers. Throwing back to the original, we have a young moppet. But unlike the early films, she’s not central to the plot and disappears for the finale. Instead, the film proffers a surprising sexual thriller alongside the traditional bit where our leads must acknowledge and thwart Chucky. I loved the gothic atmosphere and found the performances entertaining throughout. And for franchise fans, the post-credits tag proves brilliant.

Cult of Chucky 2017
The opening got my hopes up. Picking up from Curse of Chucky’s post-credits tag, Alex Vincent returns as Andy, now an adult suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. We meet him on a date that, of course, doesn’t go well. Andy returns to his isolated cabin. From a secret safe, he removes Chucky, now mangled and disfigured. Chucky cracks wise about the failed date and Andy tortures him with a blowtorch.
